In 2008, DG INFSO and NICT jointly held the 1st EU-Japan Symposium on the "New-Generation Network (NWGN)" and the "Future Internet (FI)" in an effort to step up the collaborations in the NWGN and FI research activities between the EU and Japan. And the 2nd and the 3rd symposium were held in 2009 and 2010 respectively. In the 3rd symposium, over 20 joint research subjects were proposed. Moreover, in the Japan-EU ICT Policy Talks, which was held in June 2011, it was agreed that NICT and DG INFSO would promote joint NWGN research projects over testbeds toward joint call for R&D program.

The 4th symposium will focus specially on several issues which are required to be solved with joint research efforts by the EU and Japan researchers. Extensive discussions on practical research methods for the above issues will be carried out in a form of workshop. Research subjects in some of fundamental research areas will be discussed as well for future joint research activity. Several oral presentations (10 - 15 minutes each) will be scheduled in each session.
